Mold Architects, an innovative architectural firm based in Greece, have constructed this absolutely otherworldly residence on the Greek island of Serifos. NCaved is, as the name clearly suggests, a cave-like dwelling, drilled into the side of a hill and formed after the natural slope of the land, thus creating a building that is extremely unobtrusive in the landscape. The camoflaged effect is furthered by the use of natural stone, and the roof of the dwelling has even been planted. Mold focus on the use of geometric shapes and patterns in many of their designs, the NCaved included - the minimalistic and pleasing lines and grids take nothing away from the building's organic quality. The lines between indoors and outdoors are blurred in a natural way by the use of stone walls that flow from the exterior to the interior of the building, as do the concrete floors, and the extensive use of glass floods the home with natural light and provides views of the stunning location on it's doorsteps. A guesthouse has also been integrated, creatively breaking up an apparently large singular building in a way that increases it's functionality.
And of course, being a "cave" dwelling, Mold have really captured this effect, without compromising on the essential comfort and warmth of a home - concrete and stone combined with wide spaces are the key elements in accomplishing this, but it is truly a cave in the best sense of the word - a safe and protected retreat - it's more of a womb than a tomb!
